I hope everyone enjoys the great rides. Remember, it’s summer bike season, so check out the official calendar and/or get the Bike Fun app (iPhones only) to see all the ride options!

Here are my tips for the best things to do by bike this weekend.

Saturday, August 17

Bike Portland – 8:00 a.m. at multiple locations
A citywide ride hosted by multiple Trek Bicycle Store locations throughout Portland, enjoy fun rest stops, cool prizes, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing your registration fee supports nonprofits that give away bikes to kids in need. Learn more here.

Portland Criterium – 12:00 to 20:00 on the North Park Blocks (Downtown)
You’ve seen cycling at the Olympics? Now you can experience similar vibes in your own backyard! This “criterium” will be fast and exciting for riders and spectators alike. Organizers have made it a real community event, with a fun ride starting at 4:30pm (where you can cycle the car-free route), a street party, food and drink stalls, and more. More information here.

Monkey Puzzle Tree Ride – 10:00 am at Peninsula Park (N)
These ancient trees have fascinated me since I did a similar tour years ago. Get out there and discover 11 amazing Araucaria trees and learn about their history in the area as you cycle through the north and northeast. More information here.

Bike Milwaukie Shop Local Ride – 10:00 a.m. at Spoke and Word Books (Milwaukie)
A great way to discover this cool city south of Portland. Let local cyclists show you their favorite spots and support local businesses in the process. More information here.

LA FART V – 9:00 p.m. at Ladd Circle Park (SE)
It’s the highly anticipated Ladd’s Fastest Alley Race Time Trial and if you love underground, unsanctioned and slightly risky driving, this is the event for you. Or just come along, hang out and have fun with some really wonderful and fun people. More information here.

Sunday, August 18

French Prairie Loop – 9:30 a.m. at Champoeg State Park (St. Paul)
Join two experienced guides from the Portland Bicycling Club on this 32-mile tour through the Willamette Valley. You’ll enjoy beautiful views and explore quiet country roads. Expect to travel at 13-15 mph. Learn more here.

Election Countdown Ride – 10:00 a.m. at Portland City Hall (SW)
Join BikeLoud and AARP on this educational ride to help you prepare for our new government structure. They’ll talk about the changes outside City Hall and then take you on a ride along each neighborhood’s greenway. Learn more here.

Cascadia Triple Crown Bike Polo Championships – 1:00 p.m. at Alberta Park (NE)
If you’ve ever been curious about cycle polo, this is your chance to see the region’s best players. This weekend-long event is the first stop on the road to the Triple Crown and the winning team will be the Oregon champions. More information here.

Tandem ride – 2:00 p.m. at Ladd’s Circle (SE)
Tandems are so cool and so much fun, and riding in a tandem group takes it to a whole new level! The organizer says there will be some “partner challenges” along the way. More information here.
