Watch: Daniel Donato Reaches Out Danny Clinch for ‘Double Exposure’ Video and Participates in Exclusive Relix Conversation
Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country have released a new music video for their original song “Double Exposure.” Directed by esteemed photographer Danny Clinch, the visual companion piece finds Donato and his band, Will McGee (bass, vocals), Nathan Aronowitz (keyboards, vocals) and Will Clark (drums), venturing into their funkiest realm yet, transforming the music into layered scenes that embrace a psychedelic element that overlaps visually and sonically. The video debut comes alongside an exclusive conversation with Donato and Clinch, moderated by Relix Editor-in-Chief Dean Budnick.
“Double Exposure” was originally released on Donato’s 2023 Fan Favorite collection, the second set, reflectorThe video sees the band return to the desert town of Joshua Tree, California, where the arid landscape contributes to an otherworldly atmosphere (think the cosmic surface of Mars), using trippy scenes that have been altered in the editing process to create a common thread that highlights the connection between lyrics and instrumentals, which are visually represented by the overlay of clips on top of each other to create the eponymous special effect.
Beyond short clips of the band in nature, the soul of the video lives in the decision to show a live performance of the original song. From the set-up to the stage time, Clinch presents a chronological shot that follows a day in the life of The group of musicians. Notably, this is the second video of the band shot by Clinch in the cactus-covered environment after the release of the reflector Sister song “Dancing in the Desert.” Watch now.
As an additional compliment to the ongoing collaboration between Donato and Clinch, the two took part in a conversation with Relix‘s Dean Budnick, where they cover a variety of topics from the music video itself to influences from the jam world, Grateful Dead, and Phish. Also discussed is the latest feature in the Clinch Collections T-shirt series, a vintage wash style short sleeve T-shirt featuring a photo taken by Clinch of Donato during the filming of the “Double Exposure” music video.
