WEATHER: Most of Olpe and Neosho Rapids are without power due to storms

Thunderstorms caused severe weather, heavy rain and power outages in parts of the KVOE broadcast area.

Just before 9 p.m., storms began impacting the area, prompting several severe thunderstorm warnings for areas near Emporia, but no confirmed reports.

Storms triggered several power outages affecting Evergy customers in Lyon County. Two outages stretched from downtown Emporia south through Olpe to near the Lyon-Greenwood county line. As of 11:30 p.m., more than 450 customers were affected by the outages.

Another incident almost completely covered Neosho Rapids, meaning nearly 170 customers were without power.

As of 11:30 p.m., 4 Rivers and Flint Hills Rural Electric have not reported any outages.

Wednesday night’s storms followed an unbearably hot day that saw air temperatures climb to 98 degrees while the heat index briefly reached 110 degrees.

Additional thunderstorms are possible during the morning rush hour on Thursday, with highs in the 90s. Showers and thunderstorms are possible Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday night. All counties in the region are under a slight risk of severe weather Thursday night, while areas south of a line from Elbing through Teterville to Hilltop are under a slight risk of severe weather Friday night.

11:30 p.m. Wednesday:

Several hundred Evergy customers near Emporia were without power late Wednesday evening.

Evergy has two power outages that extend from downtown Emporia through Olpe to near the Lyon-Greenwood county line. Over 450 customers are affected by these outages.

Another has almost completely covered Neosho Rapids, meaning nearly 170 customers are without power.

As of 11:20 p.m., 4 Rivers and Flint Hills Rural Electric have not reported any outages.
