James Blunt struggled to write a tribute song for Carrie Fisher

James Blunt has spoken about the creation of his Carrie Fisher tribute song “Dark Thought”.

The “You’re Beautiful” singer, who was a close friend of the late “Star Wars” actress, admitted that it took so long to write the emotional song because he wanted to do it justice.

“It must have been about seven years since she died, I’m not entirely sure, but I spent the whole time trying to write a song for her,” the 49-year-old singer said in an interview with New Music Express.

“As a songwriter, it’s usually easiest to write the most honest song because it just flows out of you,” he explained. “But I’ve been thinking about this song for so many years because she’s just such an incredible human being.”

James stayed with Carrie at her house in Los Angeles while recording his debut album, Back to Bedlam, in 2004.

The star of “When Harry Met Sally” died in December 2016 at the age of 60 from sudden cardiac arrest.

James wrote Carrie’s tribute song “Dark Thought” about visiting the estate after her death.

“The song was just a way of describing the moment when I went back to look for her after she died,” the singer explained. “I spontaneously went back to her house, drove to her gate and put my hand on it, just to feel a little bit of her there. And that’s the moment I wrote the song about.”

Dark Thought appears on James’ new album Who We Used to Be, released on October 27th.
