Macau-based concessionaire SJM Resorts announced on Wednesday that 10 food stalls will be put out to tender as part of the transformation of the Kam Pek Community Centre into a dining landmark called Kam Pek Market, and the venue is expected to begin operations before the Chinese New Year in 2025.

At a briefing on the preliminary development plan for Kam Pek Market, SJM revealed that the venue will have an area of 660 square metres on the ground floor and 545 square metres on the first floor. There will be a total of 270 public seats and 18 food and drink outlets on both floors.

In the first phase, a total of 10 convenience stores will be put up for bidding for local merchants. The convenience stores on the ground floor are expected to start operating in mid-December, while the stores on the first floor will start operating before the Chinese New Year.

The second floor will house dry food and retail stores, with most details to be announced at a later date.

The remodeling of Kam Pek Market will retain the building’s existing Art Deco-style facade with structural elements to create an atmosphere that will appeal to younger customers. SJM also noted that they hope Kam Pek Market will become a trendy and hip restaurant that will attract more tourists and locals.

For successful bidders, the monthly fees for the catering establishments will be split into two parts based on a percentage of turnover: a monthly rent and advertising fee of 10% of the catering establishments’ turnover and a monthly administration and cleaning fee of an additional 10% of turnover.

Daisy Ho, managing director of SJM, said Kam Pek Market is an important part of the company’s plan to revitalize old districts.

“We hope that through this project we can fully leverage our competitive advantages and give new impetus to the development of the Macau community,” she said.

SJM Holdings announced on May 21 that it had acquired the Kam Pek Community Centre for a price of HK$166 million (US$21.3 million).
