Marvel fans have been wondering what the future of the MCU will look like after a big hint was dropped in Deadpool and Wolverine.
The third film, starring Ryan Reynolds in the title role, has grossed more than $1 billion (£777 million) at the box office since its release in July. The film reteams him with Hugh Jackman in his iconic role as Wolverine – despite the Australian previously declaring he had had enough of playing the clawed anti-hero.
With a budget of 200 million dollars, the film went even further, with a lot of famous cameos – Warning, spoilers from here on – after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and its assets, including Wade Wilson and the X-Men Characters and movies.
After Jackman officially quit his role as Logan in the 2017 film of the same name, it remains to be seen whether he will return as Wolverine in the future, as the X-Men should be fully integrated into the MCU timeline.
Jackman is also 55, meaning any future appearance as him will bring him close to 60 and beyond – something Reynolds makes fun of in Deadpool and Wolverine, break the fourth wall and say Jackman will play the role “until he’s 90.”

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had previously hinted that a new face could emerge in the role of Wolverine at some point; the character and others are likely to be “in the game for another 100 years.”
“I think it will be a very different style and a different way of doing things. I also think if someone tried to imitate Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, that would be a pretty big mistake,” he said.
During the film, Deadpool is shown searching the multiverse after being kidnapped by the Time Variance Authority, trying to find a Wolverine suitable enough to replace Logan, who died in Deadpool’s universe in 2017. Logan The film takes place in the same universe as the Dead Pool Movies.

When visiting other universes to see if their Wolverine is a good enough fit, every single Logan is played by Jackman – except for one.
Henry Cavill, just fired from DC Studios as Superman, appears as a cigar-smoking Wolverine busy repairing a motorcycle.
Cavill posted a picture of himself in the role on Instagram and wrote: “To be safe, I shaved off my mustache for this film. Just the mustache.”
This was a cheeky dig at himself when he couldn’t shave off his moustache during reshoots for Justice League because of filming for Mission: Impossible – Fallout took place at the same time, which resulted in him having to cover his upper lip with a green screen.
Fans are now wondering if Marvel is testing whether he will be officially accepted as the next actor for the role of “Cavillerine”.
Some fans went even further and said this was a sure sign that he would play Wolverine on Earth-616; the universe inhabited by the Avengers who have so far formed the MCU, from Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man to Tom Hiddleston’s Loki.
One posted on X (Twitter): “I think Henry Cavill is the Wolverine of Earth-616. They staged his cameo to see how the audience would react and now we know that the response for Cavillrine is unanimously positive.”
Another responded by saying, “I’m all for it. All for it.” And a third said, “If Jackman doesn’t come back, I’m OK with Cavill as Wolverine.”
This would be a big step and the biggest talent transfer from DC to Marvel in the history of the franchise, as Superman is arguably the face of the entire DC universe.
Others were a little more skeptical, saying, “When the role of Wolverine is inevitably recast, they will be looking for someone for the long-term future.”
“Cavill is great, but he’s 41. By the time a movie is made with a new cast, he’d probably be closer to 50… they’d cast someone in their early 30s for sure.”
Another echoed the sentiment, writing, “I think he’s a good fit, but I feel like they’re going to pick someone younger for more and more movies.”
