The Premier League aims to ease frustration with the VAR system by launching a new social media account that will provide near-real-time updates and explanations of refereeing and operational decisions during every match.
Teams voted to keep VAR in June, despite significant criticism of last season’s technology-based refereeing system, with Wolverhampton Wanderers launching a petition to abolish VAR.
“In the absence of live VAR audio feeds as this is not permitted in football, the Premier League Match Centre will share near-live information from the VAR Hub via social media during a match,” the league said in a statement on Tuesday.
The league stated that in addition to publishing referee decisions, the X-Account @PLMatchCentre will also provide insights directly from the VAR Hub and referee experts to ensure transparency.
Experts from PGMOL, the league’s refereeing body, will also explain the Laws of the Game and provide additional information and updates on the VAR decision-making processes where required.
