PERSIA, NY (WKBW) – A boy in upstate New York is in the hospital after his bicycle was hit by a car last week.

13-year-old Jayden Kramer is making progress and is gradually having to stop taking his medication.

His mother said she had an argument with Jayden on August 6, after which he went for a bike ride – something she said he normally does to clear his head.

But he never came back home.

Jayden’s family, along with his girlfriend Callie Foley and her family, searched for Jayden for more than four hours.

Callie’s mother found him lying on the side of State Route 62 next to his bicycle at 2:09 a.m. on August 7.

“I was scared. I didn’t know how long he had been there,” Melanie Foley said.

State police said Jayden was struck by a car that drove away from the scene of the accident, leaving him injured on the side of the road.

Jayden was taken by helicopter to Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo in critical condition.

His girlfriend has visited him every day since then.

“It’s pretty difficult to sleep. The first day I didn’t sleep at all, I was awake all night,” Callie said.

Jayden’s mother did not want to speak on camera but said her son had multiple injuries, including a collapsed lung and cuts that required staples, and that he had been heavily sedated and unconscious since being admitted to the hospital.

However, she said Jayden has made progress and is slowly being weaned off the medication. He is making small movements in his hospital bed.

“We can’t wait for him to wake up and come back to us,” said Melanie Foley.

The Foleys have set up a GoFundMe page to help Jayden’s family with medical expenses.
