By: FEDweek StaffTwo Agricultural Research Service employees who are pioneering the use of advanced technologies to detect pathogens and develop drugs to improve bee health have won the annual Service to America People’s Choice Award.
The Partnership for Public Service, which sponsors the Sammies, announces the winner of this category each year, determined by public vote, before the winners of the other categories are announced in the fall.
Yan Ping (Judy) Chen and Jay D. Evans – known as the “Bee Team” – “are making incredible progress in improving the lives of bees by developing alternative treatments for the Nosema parasite, effective solutions for the Varroa mite, a ‘bee detoxification technology’ using a family of sugar compounds called cyclodextrins, and other natural remedy therapies,” the announcement said.
“Although honey bees are critical to the global food supply, their populations have declined over the past two decades. By applying innovative molecular and genomic technologies, Chen and Evans have developed therapies to reverse bee declines and improve diagnostic systems for bee diseases,” the report said.
